Before You Buy Wall Lights

You commonly see wall lights in a hallway or entryway, or outdoors on the side of the building. They belong in many other rooms, as well. Turn on the overhead light in any room to reveal its shadows. A wall box refers to the electrical installation within a wall that lets you add a light to it. 

Some sconces provide an adjustable hinge. This feature lets you use them as an uplight or a downlight. This proves handy, especially with outdoor wall lights. Some of the available sconces feature one bulb, but you can find bar lights with two, three, or four bulb fixtures attached. These larger fixtures provide a greater amount of light or spread out the illumination. They may use a smaller wattage bulb in each fixture. A single bulb fixture might provide just as much wattage, but would provide only one area of focus, while the bar with multiple lighting fixtures attached would illuminate a larger area and spread the light over a larger space. 

Consider the type of light bulb the fixture uses. You can purchase sconces that use traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs, or fluorescent tubes. A fixture will only use one type of those bulbs and will be rated for up to a specific wattage. LED bulbs last longer and require fewer bulb changes. Florescent bulbs flicker in odd ways when going out and provide a rather harsh light. Traditional bulbs use more energy but provide the type of soft light to which you may have become accustomed.

Types of Wall Lights

Not all room wall lights work the same. A few different styles exist, each with its own application. Some of these are interchangeable such as an artwork light can also work as a downlight, or a swing arm light can work as a reading light. This is not true of every type, so shop with care. Here are the various types:

• Artwork/Picture lights Create an accent light to bathe artwork in light.
• Bath Wall Lights - These soft lights install on a bathroom wall to add functional non-glare lighting.
• Downlights - Install a downlight to accent a wall or art hanging on it. These also illuminate the floor or ground providing a practical safety use.
• Uplights - Install an uplight to add an accent to a wall and create an atmosphere.
• Reading - Use these lights over your desk or worktable to provide bright, glare-free illumination with even lighting.
• Swing arm lights - These lights let you adjustable the attached arm so you can swing the light over your work without taking up desk or table space.
• Spotlights - Use these lights in your yard or in large spaces that you need to light well, especially for safety reasons.
• Vanity lights - Use these lights over the bathroom vanity to provide glare-free illumination with even lighting and no shadows.

How to Choose Wall Lights

Consider how you will use the lighting. You might need one light to illuminate a reading area or many to light a hallway. Safety lighting requires more sconces. You need to place a wall light every eight to 10 feet for safety illumination. In addition:

• Would you like to add atmosphere?- Choose upward-pointing lights that illuminate the ceiling and bounce light off of it.
• Would you like to add a task or reading lighting? - Choose a downward pointing fixture with a brighter light rating, such as a fixture designed for a 75 to 120 watt light.
• Would you like to add safety illumination? - Choose a downward pointing light with a medium brightness rating of about 40 to 60 watts.

Check the rating of your wall box. You need to know what wattage and voltage you can safely use. If you do not already have a wall box in the room in which you want to add lighting, you will either need to have an electrician add one or you must use plug-in wall lights. This means you need an electrical outlet near the area where you want to install the lighting. 

If you do not have an outlet or a wall box where you want to add light, you will need to either have one or the other installed or you need to purchase battery-operated or solar wall lights.
